5 Retro Fashion Pieces to Give You the '70s Look

Do you like retro style for a change? If you do, then rejoice because '70s styles are back in fashion this summer. Those were the heady days of hippies, flared jeans, platform shoes and huge sunglasses. This summer is your chance to recreate what your dad and mom wore when they were your age. But be careful not to overdo it; otherwise you will look like a museum piece instead of looking trendy. Let's look at some of the retro piece that you can incorporate in your wardrobe:

  • Flared Jeans: Flared jeans and wide-leg pants were the defining fashion wears of the '70s for both sexes. These can be worn with anything that you find comfortable. You can even wear one to the office, such as a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers made of '70s-inspired fabric such as chambray that will make you look decent yet fashionable.
  • Platform Shoes: Your mother probably looked chic and trendy when she wore platform shoes when she was your age. Even if you aren't into retro, you can emulate that look without having to be ashamed because platform shoes have been back in fashion for the last few years. For this summer, you can choose a 2-inch platform or a 4 to 5-inch chunky heel. If you want something more comfortable, then you should go for the flatforms, which have a wedged heel that is of equal height to the front platform so that your foot stays flat. Some of the trending flatforms this summer are created by Michael Kors, 3.1 Philip Lim and Derek Lam.
  • Jumpsuit: Imagine yourself wearing jumpsuit with platform shoes to a Rolling Stones concert back in the '70s. Musicians, sportspeople, pilots, drivers, students and children – everybody wore jumpsuits back then. They were in fashion then and they are back in fashion now. Wear a silky jumpsuit with a halter neckline in the evening and strapless rompers in the daytime.
  • Headbands: Remember Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa? Everyone who wanted to look tough and trendy used to wear headbands in those days. It was also the favorite headgear of the hippies. If wearing one around your head makes you feel like a zombie from the past, then wear a thick headband in a colorful retro print and tie it at the nape of your neck.
  • Oversized Sunglasses: From movie stars and rock stars to everyone who wanted to look fashionable, oversized sunglasses with plastic frames were indispensable in those days. They were so ubiquitous that it was almost a sacrilege not to own one.
