What is Dermatitis herpetiformis ?

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a very itchy type of dermatitis associated with intestinal and immune consumption of dairy products or gluten. Dermatitis herpetiformis usually shows up in young adults, and is more common in men and people originally from some areas of northern Europe.

Dermatitis herpetiform is looks like small clusters of red, itchy bumps. There are tiny water blisters, but these are quickly scratched off. Before they form, the area usually has a burning feeling. They scab and heal over one or two weeks, but new spots continue to appear. Dermatitis herpetiformis is a lifelong condition, but remission may occur in 10 to 20 percent.

Causes of Dermatitis herpetiformis

Dermatitis herpetiformis usually begins in the twenties, though children may sometimes be affected. It is seen in both men and women. Though the cause of the rash is unknown, dermatitis herpetiformis is frequently associated with gluten (a protein found in cereals) sensitivity in the small bowel.

Symptoms of Dermatitis herpetiformis

The common symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis are :-

  • Iintense burning.
  • Stinging and itching around the elbows, knees, scalp, buttocks and back.
  • Symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis tend to wax and wane.

Treatment of Dermatitis herpetiformis

  • Dapsone, an antibiotic, may help the majority of patients, but had a side effects.
  • Oregon grape root detoxides the body and reduces inflammation.
  • To relieve itching and promote healing, mix goldenseal root powder with vitamin E oil, then add a little honey until it is consistency of a losse paste. Apply this mixture to the affected area. This will helps to reduce itching and heal dermatitis herpetiformis.
  • Ultrapotent topical steroids may helpful.
  • Massage tea oil antiseptic cream into the skin after contact with water or irritants.

Prevention tips for Dermatitis herpetiformis

  • Aviod eggs, peanuts, wheat and dairy products.
  • Use a perfume-free moisturing lotion daily.
  • Try keeping your house humidified and take fewer shower and baths. Shower and baths deplete the skin of it's natural oil.
  • Primrose oil and Vitamin B6 have helped infants with dermatitis herpetiformis
